Attention educators! The clock is ticking as the final round of federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds approaches its deadline. State agencies and school districts must allocate their remaining ESSER funds by September 30, 2024.
Approximately $122 billion of ESSER funds are currently designated for K-12 education to mitigate the long-term effects of COVID-19-related school closures and learning disruptions. Many educators believe these remaining ESSER funds should be used to close learning gaps for students who have been disproportionately impacted, including disadvantaged students, those facing poverty and language barriers, or those attending Title 1 schools.
What Can ESSER Funds Be Used For?
ESSER funding tackles learning loss, enhances social-emotional learning, and improves academic proficiency through evidence-based programs designed to help students reach grade-level standards. These programs offer valuable, year-round supplemental instruction, such as the Extended Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P) and other Out-of-School Time (OST) initiatives.
These funds can also be used for:
• Student assessments
• Tutoring and academic support
• Services for diverse student populations
• Professional development for teachers
Choosing an Educational Partner
Many districts struggle to offer ESSER programs that reignite students' enthusiasm for learning and exploring higher education and career paths.
Community-based organizations and local education agencies (LEAs) can help offset staffing challenges for after-school and enrichment programs while providing specialized expertise that complements in-school learning.
Look for a provider that:
• Offers engaging, student-centered, and results-oriented programs
• Embraces diverse student populations and learning styles
• Aligns instruction with state standards and program goals
• Stimulates student engagement with hands-on projects
• Cultivates positive relationships with school/district staff
• Delivers developmentally appropriate structure and supervision
