Utilizing our hybrid class format, STEM Center served three grade bands of students across three class times simultaneously! Our K-3rd graders dove into natural science while our 4th-8th graders explored physics and structural engineering.
Our instructors used the traditional 90:10 Spanish-to-English ratio for younger students, whereas 4th+ students received additional instruction in English to increase their proficiency and comprehension.
Foundational principles of DLI
In a dual language program, language is seen as a strength to be leveraged, not a problem to be fixed. Students in these programs, known as emergent bilinguals, are acquiring and learning in two languages.
According to the National Association for Bilingual Education, DLI programs are additive, meaning students acquire a second language while maintaining their first. In two-way DLI programs, students from different linguistic backgrounds learn together, becoming bilingual and biliterate.
Why DLI is powerful
Research by U. S. News & World Report shows that learning academic content in two languages benefits native and non-native English speakers. Here are a few reasons to consider DLI:
• Biliteracy enhances cognitive function.
• Learning a language is easier for young children.
• English learners succeed while maintaining their native language.
• Students develop strong social connections and cultural awareness.
• Bilingualism offers economic, cultural, cognitive, and psychosocial advantages.
• DLI programs can boost academic achievement, self-pride, and cultural understanding.
DLI and your students
DLI programs offer a dual benefit for English learners: developing English proficiency while strengthening their home language. These students gain skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and cross-cultural communication in two languages.
Additionally, DLI programs help students meet or exceed academic standards across all subjects, as outlined by the Common Core State Standards.
When DLI intersects with STEM
Remarkable things happen when DLI meets STEM. English learners in DLI STEM courses acquire new technical skills and make significant strides in math and science proficiency.
At STEM Center USA, our instructors see these benefits firsthand through our migrant education and bilingual programs. This summer, 6th-8th grade students from the Ventura County Office of Education increased their math proficiency by 24%. Similarly, 5th-7th grade students from the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education saw a 16% improvement in their math proficiency.
Beyond academic gains, these students' interest in college, coding, and engineering surged, highlighting the transformative power of integrating DLI with STEM education.
STEM Center USA is proud to offer DLI programs that enrich students' learning experiences through exciting, hands-on STEM courses. Contact us to learn more about our customized DLI programs for your students.
